Spotlight on evodesign

evodesign avatar

Founded in 1995 by Andy Pimlett, Evo Design offers creative identity solutions, websites and new media marketing services. They live on Penny Lane, Liverpool, UK.

Evo Design say, “We are a multi-disciplinary digital design agency fuelled on ideas and fresh ground coffee.”

Their avatar is strikingly simple yet the perfect iconic symbol of their design ethos within their work – a stylish simplicity and aesthetically functional. Already hypnotised my eye cannot help be drawn to focus on the monochromatic target.

The Evo Design branding also uses classic retro style icons to symbolise varying aspects of their company. The emblem of a juggling unicyclist depicts multi-disciplined experts in their field.

The bespoke vintage vector icons compliment the brand font which is contrastingly modern. It works and the two styles blend to enhance the brand’s contemporary elegance.

The business cards are beautifully letter pressed; the design is minimal and chic enforcing high quality ethics. At this point I must pay homage to the film American Psycho business card scene – (watch here) which makes me smile everytime I analyse what a business card says about a brand or individual. Egg shell white or bone colour…the evodesign cards certainly look obsessively good.

Evo Design have a new website under development to reflect the new brand design. It promises more unique vintage icons, meticulous attention to detail and modern web development.

Spacepunx EP Released

The new Pete Bentham & the Dinnerladies EP has just been released. It has a space theme and is a tribute to Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (“real life Ziggy Stardust”).

The band launched the EP on Friday 12th April 2013 at Drop the Dumbells Gallery, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of him being the first human to journey into outer space when he completed an orbit of the earth on 12th April 1961.

The front cover artwork on the Spacepunx EP is an illustration of some of the band wearing spacesuits – this band is on a mission! The design style and colours, were influenced by vintage Russian Communist posters. It is in keeping alongside the bands logo emblem of a Dinner Lady saluting.

The artwork on the back cover of was inspired by a true story about Yuri Gagarin landing back down to earth. The story goes, upon returning to earth the first people Yuri Gagarin saw was a woman and her daughter picking potatoes in a field near where his capsule landed. On approaching them, the woman asked: “Can it be that you have come from outer space?” to which he replied, “As a matter of fact, I have!”. As soon as I heard this charming tale, I wanted to capture it in an image.

The Spacepunx EP includes songs called, “Hey Yuri!”, “Is There Anybody Out There?”, “Dinner Ladies are Go!” and “Mr Astronaut”. The EP is dedicated to Keith Leiper.

The band is named after Pete’s mum who was a Dinner Lady. Pete says, “We play primitive Rock & Roll and sing about stuff”. Band members are, Pete Bentham: Guitar & Vocals, Marigoldy: Bass & Vocals, Gabrielle Fray-Bentos / Ben: Drums, John the Caretaker: Saxophone, Cat & Kitty: The Dinnerettes

Penny Lane Song Map

My Dad was probably in the same class as George Harrison at Dovedale Infants, being born the same year (1943). I used to live on Penny Lane and frequented the Penny Lane Wine Bar and Sergent Pepper’s Bistro often. So when a project came up to illustrate a map for the Penny Lane area, I was made up.

Penny Lane is of course famous from a song written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. McCartney and Lennon would meet at Penny Lane junction in the Wavertree area to catch a bus into the centre of the city. At the time, in the 1960s, this was a significant bus terminus for several routes. The name Penny Lane is also used for the area that surrounds its junction with Smithdown Road, Smithdown Place (where the terminus was located) and Allerton Road, including a busy shopping area.

The Penny Lane Song Map is commissioned by The Penny Lane Development Trust (www.pldt.org.uk/). They contracted evodesign (www.evodesign.cc) to produce an illustrated map highlighting the places in the Penny Lane song and signposting places within the local community, giving a useful guide to tourists.

The map uses ink drawn artwork of places in the song, such as the barbers and the local fire station. There are snippets of information about these places as well as other areas of interest to tourists, such as John and Paul’s childhood homes. Local businesses are shown on the map within the Penny Lane vicinity.

Aspects of design were to achieve a 1960’s Liverpool street vibe. Inspired by old street signs, retro photos and newspaper wrapped fish ‘n’ chips the map style evolved.

We hope it proves a useful guide to tourists, packed with facts and places of interest. Enjoy the leaflet and embrace this thriving area and all it has to offer. Full size, I think it makes a really cool poster for the wall!

You can find the maps across Liverpool city and particularly around the Penny Lane area in L18. Also, If you are a business interested in joining the LoveOurLane Business Network you can register your interest for LoveOurLane at www.loveourlane.com.
